What's the Difference Between a Project and a Program?

A plain-language explanation of Projects vs Programs in Phygii.

Projects and Programs in Phygii

Phygii uses two related concepts — Projects and Programs — to help you organize work across your portfolio. Understanding the difference between them makes it easier to find what you are looking for and keep your data structured.

What is a Project?

A Project is a specific, defined scope of work tied to one or more locations. Think of a project as a single effort — for example, a drone capture campaign at a specific store, a post-renovation documentation visit, or an annual inspection at one facility.

Projects have a start date, an end date, a status, and a link to the location where the work takes place. They can also have media, documents, users, and assignments attached to them.

What is a Program?

A Program is a collection of related projects, typically representing a broader initiative that spans multiple locations. For example, an annual inspection program might contain individual projects for each of the 50 stores in your portfolio.

Programs give you a way to group and track a set of projects together under one umbrella, making it easier to see overall progress and manage work at scale.

A Simple Example

Imagine you are running an annual roof inspection across your entire portfolio:

  • The Program would be: 2026 Annual Roof Inspection
  • Each Project within that program would be the inspection at a single location: Store #42 — Roof Inspection, Store #17 — Roof Inspection, and so on.
